Why GW isn't successful.
Guild Wars is a very unique MMO. Besides being free to play (kinda) It also introduced some very unique mechanics and is probably the only game to have the level capped at 20. For almost 3 years now after the last expansion, NOTHING NEW WAS RELEASED. Almost all MMOs have new content coming every month or so. Guild wars NEVER had a patch to add in game content, only fixing bugs, buffing/nerfing skills, and sometimes adding events. I ask myself how is it possible that so many people still do uw and fow all day long for over 3 years without nothing new. The PvP however which is quite better then a lot more other games still lives but is very problematic too. Instead of having tiers in the High end pvp and allowing new players to achieve ranks and get in the circle, Hero's Ascent and Sadly even the kodex arena are only "open" for ranked people, but in order to achieve such rank one must PvP and win in those same areas. How can he do so if he isn't ranked? He can't. Which is why the high end PvP is a closed club.
Another problem with the game is the equipments. The moment you reach level 20, sure you can buy some better looking gear for 60 times the price, but other than some runes and insignias (which are too easy to acquire if you ask me) most people have the same gear aspects and there is almost no difference between someone good and someone bad. No Diversity. Don't get me wrong I hate MMOs where if your gear is bad you are bad, but guild wars took the opposite to another level.
Another problem I find with guild wars is the way you make transactions, You actually have to waste your time in Kamadan with 100 more people trying to sell their stuff HOPING someone will see your line and actually buy what you offer, usually it never happens. And no this forum isn't an alternative when you have to wait 2 weeks to find a buyer.
Also, you are only given 8 slots for characters (considering you have all campaigns) while there are 10 classes. And you always want to have at least 1 PvP char for testing. You end up with 7 slots of characters and once they all reach level 20 you probably wouldn't delete them. So how could you try a mesmer? or perhaps a paragon? (don't take it personally people who actually play these classes). To actually do so you would have to pay money for more characters. Why is that? because nc soft's sales were dropping after 5 years obviously so they needed something new, something that would actually sell. So instead of paying for the game every month you pay when you want for stuff you want, fair enough? No. A good mmorpg never gives actual game advantages to people who pay more money, there are many MMOs that make you pay money for those advantages (mostly free to play ones) and they SUCK.
Without new content, high end equipments with advantages over low end equipments, better ways to sell and buy, I believe that the people who still didn't quit playing will quit soon.

The equipment bit is called balance. As for new content, they've explained why it only comes every once in a blue mood. Atm, they have a very small live team due to something called "Guild Wars 2." You can find a lot of information at http://www.guildwars2guru.com/ and the official site, http://www.guildwars2.com/en/ . As for pvp, well I'll let someone more informed on this take over that part.

Guild wars 2 will be released in 2 years. If what you say is actually true then there is no reason for someone to even try out guild wars. And no, never has there been a patch that added a new map.

First, you have no idea WHEN GW2 will be released, so you probably shouldn't presume you know, even if it is what you would call an "educated guess". Second, there has been content added. You're right in saying that no new maps have been implemented, but in the past year or so alone, we've seen major content additions, including Nicholas the Traveler, Codex Arena, daily quests, and War in Kryta. Also, the title of your topic itself is wrong. GW is by no means unsuccessful. It is one of the few surviving Cooperative online games left that have a decently large player base. ALSO, the fact that GW has been around for 5 years in itself automatically makes it successful.
If you need constant additions to a game, go play WoW. The fact is, GW2 is the main focus of Anet right now, and after 5 busy years, combined with the manpower and resources being sent over to GW2, it's amazing that there is any new content, skill changes, etc at all.

hmmm...i so thought this was about the fall/decline of guild wars,
but no just some1 trolling about nothing.
for a mmo that like cost next to nothing and lasting 5yrs is successful of course theres flaws in guild wars but its like really value for money.
this topic is like so wrong.

I thought GW was successful. It caused them to make a GW2.
8 character slots and 10 classes is a smart business move. When the game originally launched there were 6 classes and 4 character slots. There has always been 2 less than 'needed'. Many people (myself included) bought multiple accounts so they could have more characters. Later they allowed more character slots to be purchased. This generates revenue from a game with no monthly fees.
Sorrows Furnace was a free addition to the game. The Zaishen quests were a free addition. Nick was a free addition. WiK is a free addition. You could even argue DoA was a free addition, but that was really just a delayed release. I didn't expect regular additions to the game, because I wasn't paying a monthly fee. I expected to get new games added to the series on occassion, and was happy when they added more things like Sorrows.
Some people play multiple characters, and want to do lots of things with each. Some people play lots of PvP, and not all PvP requires rank. If you are unhappy with the game, find something else to do. I'm not sure why you posted this in Sardelac as you didn't even make a suggestion.... unless you are suggesting Anet add more content.... but that is extremely vague, and not worth a topic. I'll sign for a mod to close this or move it to Riverside to join the other QQ topics.

I didn't even bother reading it because just the title of this thread shows the OP doesn't know what he's talking about.
GW has been a successful game - it's not a matter of opinion, it's a simple fact.

GW1 has outlasted most TV shows, the original Xbox, and other MMOs. Its still successful, at least to all the people I see playing online. They wouldnt bother making GW2 if it was anything but a success. IMO, The Fan Base is as strong as ever.

I love how the title of this thread asserts that gw is not successful as though it were fact. I'd say its pretty damn successful

I agree! Also
Bill Gates isn't rich
Tiger Woods isn't good at golf.
China doesn't have a lot of people in it.
The Ocean isn't wet.
And the Beatles were black.
-.-

If GW was unsuccessful then this forum would probably be inexistent by now, and you wouldn't be posting here.

well i'm not sur if the OP has noticed but there are >300 at Anet (i think?) the majority of those are working on a completely new game. the OP also may not have noticed the entirety of the war in kryta ? yes it may be rather drawn out but thats due to the fact that an important staff member was sick.
having and endless hierarchy of equipment ranks doesn't make for a good game. dunno about everyone else but if i don't like farming for non-essential titles then i'm not gonna like farming for armour i need.

yep. thats guild wars, all real world transactions are for
non-advantageous items.
Oh yeah, that PvP thing. that may be slightly due to titles, but on the main part its the players fault . Anet didn't stroll into HA saying "all who are >R3 shall not compete in this tournament"

Venting perhaps? GW has done very well, IMHO. I played WoW since about two weeks after it was released way back there. I started GW the day Prophecies went live. Of the two, I like Guild Wars best.
If you go over to the WoW forums and dig around, you will find threads on why WoW stinks, why WoW is dying, why all of the new stuff is just the same old stuff with a new paint job, etc. True of any game.
Play anything long enough and you need a change. I have played a lot of other games along the way. See if you can find a new game that will give you a breath of fresh air and from a distance perhaps you will get a new perspective on GW.

I have to ask here what was "Sorrows Furnace" if no no maps have EVER been introduced in a patch? I certainly remember having to download all those files. Then not only Sorrows Furnace but the area just outside of it and then that OUTPOST that is there to get to it was also NEW stuff. Granted that's the only live content they ever gave us but they did GIVE it to us we didn't have to buy it.
